Hazarashen Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies

The 'Hazarashen' Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies (HACES) is a non-profit public organization established in 1997 by a group of cultural anthropologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and Yerevan State University. The Center specializes in anthropological (ethnographic) studies of Armenia, neighboring regions, and communities of the Armenian diaspora.

Our Mission

  • Analyze and assess socio-cultural, economic, and ethnic processes
  • Contribute to the study and promotion of Armenian cultural heritage
  • Develop the field of cultural anthropology in Armenia

Our History

The founding members of 'Hazarashen' carried out a series of nationwide research and consultancy projects before the official registration of the center (starting from 1994), commissioned by various international organizations, including the World Bank.

Areas of Operation

Anthropological Research

The research activities of the center primarily focus on the anthropology of memory and crisis, as well as the study of intangible cultural heritage:

  • Memory of the Genocide
  • Soviet experience and political repression
  • Artsakh movement, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement
  • Anthropology of ritual, customs, and daily life

Educational Activities

The Center develops and implements educational programs that address issues related to the teaching of memory, history, and cultural heritage. Members are also involved in teacher training and the creation of educational materials.

International Recognition

In 2020, the 'Hazarashen' Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies received accreditation from UNESCO, becoming a consultant organization to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Our Goal

We believe that ethnological knowledge can contribute to shaping scientific, public, and political dialogue on crucial societal issues related to memory, identity, social justice, and cultural heritage. 'Hazarashen' aims to combine theoretical analysis with practical field experience, building a bridge between academic knowledge and societal needs.
